OVERVIEW
Not many towns Serbia glow in the night as Kraljevo does. The public lighting system has been expanding over the years, and some 16,000 lights are now illuminating the urban areas, suburban settlements, and a significant number of surrounding villages. This cost the city almost EUR 1.2 million every year just to pay for the electricity.
With the aim of cutting the cost, the city approved a plan drawn up by the City Directorate for Urban Planning and Construction. According to the program, the city started replacing old bulbs with LED fixtures in 2017, with 9,200 fixtures to be replaced by the end of 2019. The city is also planning to procure and install new equipment for managing the public lighting, so control panels are already being moved away from substations in order to simplify and optimize the system.
SOLUTION
LUMENIA was selected as the provider of S LUM LED fixtures for replacing the 9,000 old environmentally unsafe and energy-inefficient lightbulbs in the city, and already supplied the first 4,000 fixtures last year.
As the city’s official website reports, the project value amounts to over EUR 2.7 million, and the Government of Slovenia provided 30% of the project funding in the form of grants to the City of Kraljevo. Thanks to Slovenia's donation of EUR 846,000 for energy efficiency, the city’s old and worn mercury-vapor lamps have been replaced with LED lighting.
”Lamps have been replaced in all parts of the city where old mercury-vapor lamps were used, mostly in suburban neighbourhoods and surrounding villages. In line with the contract we signed in late January 2018, we will replace another 2,000 lamps,” Mayor of Kraljevo Predrag Terzić explained.
Mr. Terzić also expressed his satisfaction over hosting some of the stakeholders in the project. As he pointed out, of the 9,000 old environmentally unsafe bulbs consuming a lot of electricity in the city of Kraljevo, more than 4,000 lamps have been replaced over the past year. "Lamps were replaced in all parts of the city where old mercury-vapor lamps were used, mostly in suburban neighbourhoods and surrounding villages. RESOLUTION
When we complete the replacement of these bulbs, install new cabinets and construct a monitoring and control system that will prevent unauthorized use of electricity from the public lighting system, we will have the full capacity to save power, and can completely recover the cost of the investment in just a few years. The fixtures we purchased have a 10-year warranty, which allows us not only to cover the costs of the project, but also to save extra money and protect the environment," explained Terzić.
